2003 Artist of the year
Marlene Gwathney, R.N., has been developing her talent since 1982 under the direction of gifted painter and mentor Betty Mason. Oils and watercolors are her media of choice. She enjoys painting on the weekends at their country home in Arkansas. Her subject matter has changed over the years from wildlife to still life. Her pieces are now larger and the colors more vibrant.
Marlene joined the West Clinic in 1997 and works closely with Dr. Lee Schwartzberg. She has shown her paintings in galleries and won numerous awards in competitions. Today, she is commissioned by many admirers, and her works can be found in homes across the country.
AB INTRA, Latin for 'from within', has been added to the Wings permanent collection of artwork in 2003. It was created to celebrate Wings and honor those who help ensure that support will always be available at no charge to anyone touched by cancer. "I wanted to paint something from within my deepest feelings. Working in the field of oncology, I feel that we all examine our hearts periodically. I wanted this piece to create an emotional response and let it speak directly to the viewer. The dramatic colors convey a message of love, respect and celebration of life."
