Inspirational Poems

Deep peace of the running wave to you,
of water flowing, rising, and falling,
sometimes advancing, sometimes receding . . .
May the stream of your life flow unimpeded!
Deep peace of the running wave to you!

Deep peace of the flowing air to you,
which fans your face on a sultry day,
the air which you breathe deeply rhythmically,
which imparts to you energy, consciousness, life.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you !

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
who, herself unmoving, harbours the movements
and facilitates the life of the ten thousand creatures,
while resting contented, stable, tranquil.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you!

Deep peace of the shining stars to you,
which stay invisible til darkness falls
and discloses their pure and shining presence
beaming down in compassion on our turning world.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you!

- adapted from the Gaelic

Drink your tea slowly and reverently,
as if it is the axis
on which the whole earth revolves
-slowly, evenly, without
rushing toward the future;
live the actual moment.
Only this moment is life.

- Thich Nhat Hahn

Although I try
to hold the single thought
of Buddha's teaching in my heart,
I cannot help but hear
the many crickets' voices calling as well.

- Izumi Shikibu

Joyful Wings

The time comes when we offer a hand
Because love for others is the purpose for the land
We see the outstretched wings in a cloud
As we search for an answer and cry aloud
We ask the questions day after day
Oh how can this be?
Then God sends a cloud to show us the way
He sends a helping spirit and hand
All these things come in the image of joyful Wings Cancer Foundation, Inc.

- Wyvonia Woods Harris

Hope abides; therefore I abide.
Countless frustrations have not cowed me.
I am still alive, vibrant with life.
The black cloud will disappear,
The morning sun will appear once again
In all its supernal glory.

- Sri Chinmoy

Look to this Day

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!

- Kalidasa

Normal day, let me be aware of
the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you, love you,
bless you before you depart.
Let me not pass you by in quest
of some rare and perfect

From "Desiderata"

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence . . .
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noise confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

- Max Ehrman

On that day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble
May the clay dance to balance you
And when your eyes freeze behind the gray window and the ghost of loss is in you
May a flock of colors, indigo, red, green, and azure blue come to awaken in you a meadow of delight
When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and there is a stain of ocean blackness beneath you
May there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home
May the nourishment of the earth be yours
May the clarity of the light be yours
May the fluency of the ocean be yours
May the protection of the ancestors be yours
May a slow wind work these words of love around you as an invisible cloak to mind your life.
